I CAN HELP MY COMMUNITY GROW
By Ireland Crabtree,Second rade,
Zion Lutheran School
We could plant some trees in a park or two. I would help grow gardens in my neighborhood. Instead of riding in a car, you could ride your bike or you could walk. We could grow a vegetable garden and give some food to a food pantry. You need to ride your bike because you don’t need to use gas. We should plant trees because it takes in carbon dioxide. I could have a neighborhood clean up. Reuse old shoes instead of buying new ones. Also you can reuse old backpacks too. We can recycle old cans, bottles and paper.
By Drake Shadle, First Grade,
New Palestine Elementary
I can can help my community grow by picking up trash. Trash can harm animals. Animals can also eat trash and get sick.
I can also help my community grow by recycling. Recycling is important because it saves trees. Let me explain how. We cut down trees for paper. If we throw away paper, that will waste trees.
Giving can also help my community grow. People can donate food to soup kitchens That way people with no food or money could have food.
Following the fifth annual Dani’s Dreams Memorial Walk/Run, the new Go Green Discovery Center will be opened. Donate $100 and your name will be listed on the dedication plaque at the center. Email dgriffins@netzero.com for more information.

Dani’s Dreams Outdoor Education Center Comes in From the Rain
Dani’s Dreams Outdoor Education Center moved indoors April 9 for the third Earth Day Dedication Event. With the spring thunderstorm, Zion Lutheran students and teachers made some quick adjustments and set up their demonstrations in the school’s hallways near where volunteers packed meals for Kids Against Hunger.
Girl Scout Troop 1170 presented the flag and led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance and Zion Lutheran School Principal Kristie Sombke opened the event with prayer.
At the learning centers, students uncovered artifacts, created chalk and butterfly pictures, magnets and sun catchers, planted seeds, checked the weather (it was a bit wet) and recorded the temperature. Students who also completed the Dani’s Dreams quiz received a handcrafted cross made from trees. Randy Caster from Hillcrest Tree Farms distributed Norway Spruce tree seedlings. All those attending cast their votes for the 2011 T-shirt design and essay contest for the fourth annual Dani’s Dreams Memorial Walk/Run Aug. 6 at New Palestine High School.
This year’s Earth Day event focused on the newly established Dani’s Dreams Community Garden. Area Scout troops and Zion students are adopting the four raised beds in the garden, planting vegetables for a harvest with a portion donated to local food banks. If you want to be a part of the Community Garden team and have knowledge and a green thumb to share, email Donna Griffin, dgriffins@netzero.com.
Dani’s Dreams Outdoor Education Center is open to all community and school groups for tours, field trips and other special events. Adopt one of the seven learning centers by making a donation of $100 or more and your name will be on that center’s sign. Donors who give $100 or more will also be placed on T-shirts for the Dani’s Dreams Memorial Walk/Run Aug. 6.
